I recently upgraded to the MSI Sword 17, and wow, this machine has truly exceeded my expectations in every way. If you’re serious about gaming or need a high-performance laptop for content creation or productivity, this is a beast that delivers.
Performance: First off, the Intel Core i9-14900HX paired with the RTX 4070 is an absolute game-changer. Whether I’m gaming or running demanding software like Adobe Premiere Pro or 3D modeling tools, this laptop never breaks a sweat. Games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Red Dead Redemption 2 run at ultra settings with solid frame rates, and I can actually notice the power difference compared to my previous laptop. The 32GB of RAM is more than enough for multitasking, and with the 1TB SSD, everything boots up quickly, and file transfers are lightning fast.
Display: The 17-inch screen is a dream come true for gaming and media consumption. It’s large, immersive, and the 144Hz refresh rate makes it a joy for fast-paced gaming. The colors pop, and the details are crystal clear, even in the most visually demanding games. It’s definitely a step up from smaller 15.6” screens. The only downside is that it’s a bit on the larger side if you’re looking for something ultra-portable, but for a desktop-replacement gaming laptop, the size is perfect for me.
Design & Build: The Cosmo Gray finish is sleek and minimalistic, yet it still looks premium and futuristic. The build quality feels solid, and although it’s a larger laptop, it’s surprisingly not too heavy. It has a nice heft to it, giving it a robust feel. I do appreciate the subtle MSI branding on the lid—it’s not too loud or flashy, just enough to show it’s a high-end machine.
Keyboard & Trackpad: The RGB keyboard is responsive and comfortable for long gaming sessions or typing marathons. I was a bit worried about the larger keyboard layout, but it’s surprisingly ergonomic. The keys are well-spaced, with good travel, and the backlighting looks great, especially in darker rooms. The trackpad is also large and smooth, but I mostly use a mouse for gaming anyway, so no complaints there.
Cooling & Noise: One of the best features of this laptop is its cooling system. Even under heavy loads, it stays cool and quiet. I’ve had some laptops that turn into jet engines when gaming, but the Sword 17 stays relatively quiet even when pushing high-end games to their limits. The cooling is efficient, and I never noticed any significant throttling during extended gaming sessions.
Battery Life: Battery life is decent for a gaming laptop of this power, lasting around 4-5 hours with light usage (web browsing, watching movies). Naturally, gaming will drain the battery much faster, but it’s not something you’re likely to use for extended gaming without plugging in anyway. Still, it’s better than I expected for a 17-inch machine.
Ports & Connectivity: The ports are plentiful and include USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, Ethernet, and an SD card reader, making it easy to connect to peripherals or external displays. I do a lot of video editing, so the extra connectivity options are a huge bonus. Plus, the laptop has Wi-Fi 6, which is a must for fast, stable internet connectivity.
Conclusion: I can confidently say the MSI Sword 17 is one of the best gaming laptops I’ve ever owned. It’s powerful, gorgeous, and versatile enough to handle anything I throw at it—gaming, content creation, or work. The Intel Core i9 and RTX 4070 combo provides incredible performance, and the 17-inch screen is perfect for those who want a larger, more immersive display. If you’re in the market for a serious gaming laptop or a high-performance machine, I highly recommend this one. It’s worth every penny.
